I’ve been telling Ty (probably for years) that I’m going to make a sweater for him. According to ravelry, I bought yarn for his sweater this past February, and I know I had been thinking about Elizabeth Zimmerman’s saddle shoulder sweater before that, I might have even sketched some of the design elements then. When Cyber Monday rolled around this year I made a deal with Ty, I wouldn’t feel guilty about spending money on lots of sale yarn from WEBS if I started working on his sweater. Well I made a swatch, including all the little elements, measured it and thought about the sweater some more. Obviously after Cyber Monday comes Christmas knitting, so his sweater got pushed to the wayside. No longer! I cast on soon after I finished Ty’s december socks, and with the exception of a few small things, it’s the only thing I’ve knit since.
For a while I had thought about knitting this sweater in secret and surprising Ty with the results, but I’m glad that I didn’t. I’ve changed a few things from my original imaginings, partly because I didn’t look at my sketch when I was swatching and partly because that’s just what I do. I also made sure to read the entirety of the pattern, which, you’ll know if you’ve read any EZ patterns, needs some math and some note taking. A few calculations, sketches, and recalculations later, I figure out where all of the decreases were going for the shoulders, and through that, where to place the front cable. Before I cast on for the sleeves I collaborated with Ty on whether he’d mind cables going up the arm. I know Ty thinks that knitting patterns are often over designed, and while I don’t completely disagree with him, it’s hard not to add just one more thing. We both agreed that a small cable on the sleeves would complement the main one, and not detract from the sweater as a whole.
I’ve been chugging along, and I’m now just about ready to join the sleeves to the body. My goal is to finish the sweater in the next two weeks, partly because I’m worried classes and lab will take over my life and then I’ll move onto new, exciting knitting, but mostly because I don’t want Ty to be upset when he finds out that (don’t fall out of your chair) I ordered more yarn from WEBS.
(if you’ve never heard of the sweater curse, wikipedia actually has a good article)
