This page has been up for nearly a week on my computer, waiting for me to type something other than “This hat was inspired”. Well, I don’t really know what this hat was inspired by, so that sentence isn’t ever going to get finished. Despite not knowing how this pattern popped into my head, I’m utterly in love with it.
It’s a rather simple pattern, with ribbing going up both sides and seed stitch and stockinette on the front and back. It uses up about 200 yards or half of a skein of sock yarn. As I searched my stash for something that fit with the pattern I reached towards Dirty Water DyeWorks Paula, and the combination of the beautiful tonal gray yarn and the seed stitch immediately made me think of cobblestone streets.
I knit up a second one in Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock Lightweight, trying to see if it still looked good with multicolored yarn. Of course, that yarn was originally slated for socks for Ty, so now the hat belongs to him. Have I mentioned that he gets possessive over “his” yarn?
It was nice to be able to walk down to the cobblestone streets in Red Hook, Brooklyn and try to do a photo shoot without getting run over. Fortunately there’s not a lot of traffic down there. It took a while to figure out how I was going to get the hat and the cobblestones in the same picture, but I guess it just goes to show that I’ve got more to learn (like, maybe plan ahead next time…)!
All joking aside, from sketch to pattern this hat was a fun and easy design for me. My tech editor Ruth was a gem, as always, and my test knitters knit up beautiful hats and gave me great feedback. If you’d like to purchase this pattern, you can find it on Ravelry for $4.
