I needed something cable-y to do.
Head circumference: 22″
Yarn: Caron Simply Soft Heather
Needles: US 4 / 3.5 mm
Gauge: 20 sts / 4 in
Band:
Provisional cast on 22 sts

Follow Design 1 nineteen times.
Follow rows 1-6 of Design 1.
Cut a tail and graft two ends together, ensuring to complete the row seven cabling.
There should be one less st on the back (provisional) needle.
As kitchener st is kp/pk, follow same notation for this grafting. Set up: p/k
kp/pk, kp/pk, kp/pk, kk/kp, pk/kp, pp/pk, kp/pk, kk/kp, pk/kk, pp/pk, kp/pk, kp/pk, kp/pk, kp/pk, kk/pk, pk/kp, pk/kp, pp/pk, kp/pk, kk/kp, pk/k, p
Sew in all tails.
Main Part:
Pick up 80 sts from the band (side opposite from 2×2 cable), distribute evenly on four needles.
*[P2, inc(P)]x3, P2, inc(K), K2, inc(K) repeat from *
Note: inc(P) – pick up cross bridge from previous row and purl into the back of it.
inc(K) – pick up cross bridge from previous row and knit into the back of it.
*P11, K4 repeat from *

Note: 2KF, 2KC, 1PB – put four knit sts on cable needle, hold in front, purl next st, place the left two knit sts back on the left hand needle, hold cable needle in front, knit two sts, place remaining two knit sts on left hand needle, knit two sts
Follow Design 2 (eight times around) four times (up). (Five times if you want the hat to end below the bottom of your ears).
Follow Design 2 but P2tog after the row two and four cables.
Repeat until there is one purl st between cables.
Work all sts as they lie.
Work 2KF, 2KC, 1PB cable, only for the last knit st of cable SSK with the purl st.
K2tog all the way around.
Cut a length of tail, weave it through remaining live sts, pull tight.
Sew in all tails.

Love the hat!! I’m in the market for good chart software I like how your looks. What did you use?

Hi Dana,
I just stumbled across your website while trolling thru the “Knitting Pattern Central – Free Hat Patterns” and I just had to reply for a couple of reasons: I’m an old GWU alum myself (as is my red-headed son – so that’ll give you a rough idea of my age) + I’m absolutely crazy about knitting! I made a pledge (to myself) not to buy any yarn for the month of July – and I only “slipped” once (how could I pass up some nifty dark green Bernat eyelash yarn for only a $1 a skein??). I have to sneak the yarn into my house so my husband doesn’t suspect my stash is increasing. I’ve heard there’s a website for folks like me who have a hard time passing a yarnstore without adding to their stash.
Are you still at GWU? (I won’t ask “what’s your major” ’cause I think that became passe about the time I graduated….) Keep up the knitting, oh and BTW, I love your hat pattern.

This is gorgeous! My needles are poised and ready to make it, but I’m unclear about picking up 8 stitches for the main part. Please advise!
Many thanks,
Madeleine

I am so sorry! I’m surprised no one caught that mistake before. Instead of 8, it should be 80, which makes much more sense. If you have a more questions feel free to email me at danamberman@gmail.com
